John T. Bishop
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary for John T. Bishop, 74, who died Sunday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass will be recited at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church Graveside services will follow in the Santa Maria Cemetery, conducted by Santa Maria Elks Lodge No. 1538.
Mr. Bishop was born Feb. 17, 1907 in San Francisco. He had been a resident of Santa Maria since 1912 and had been employed as a rural letter carrier with the U.S. Post Office for 33 years, retiring in 1969. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the second Nicaraguan Campaign from 1928-1931, and World War II. He was a member of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge No. 1538, American Legion of Santa Maria Veterans of Foreign Wars McGinley Brothers Post 2521, Santa Maria Valley Historical Society, Senior Citizens Advisory Commission to the Board of Supervisors of Santa Barbara County, Tri-county Commission for Senior Citizens, Area Agency on Aging, Men in Action, past commander of the Disabled American Veterans of Santa Maria, past president of the Area Rural Carriers Association and past president to the Santa Maria Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his widow, Evelyn M. Bishop, Santa Maria; daughters, Beverly Van Doorne, Chatsworth, Betty Fumia, Santa Maria and Barbara Chapman, Guadalupe; sister, Shirley Duerig, Grover City; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will include Joe Fumia, John Fumia, Bill summers, Harry Goodchild, Leo Dettamonte and Arnie Alvarez.
Honorary pallbearers will include Herman Castle, George Scheiff, Al Rury and Jack Wymore.
Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary.
